There was another novel in the series between this and Gardens of the Sun - In the Mouth of the Whale - that is set half-way between the two and contains several key events that are referenced in Evening's Empires. So be sure not to skip ahead to this novel until you read the first three in the series.

Re: Fear of an iPad planet - The occasional scrivener - Gustaf Erikson's weblog

Hi! No, not really. Obviously I didn't know the iPad would be a huge hit, and inspire an entirely new class of computing device. I'm not as sanguine about there being tons of used PCs around in the future for hackers to pound on, but on the other hand we have Rasberry Pis now so that's OK I guess?

My wife loves her iPad and she's just as creative (creating contents on forums, email, FB etc) as she'd be with a PC (more, as the iPad is better for her as a legally blind user). Personally I'm planning on getting a Mini or a Nexus 7 when I start commuting by public transport again in the fall. And the iPad is like crack for my sister's kids.

Re: Fear of an iPad planet - The occasional scrivener - Gustaf Erikson's weblog

Stumbled across your post about iPads. Do a normal install from the 1st The New Yorker DVD on your Mac.
2. Drag any of the remaining 8 DVD files into the (HD/Library/Application Support/The New Yorker/Issues) folder.
3. Download SQLite Database Browser
4. Find the file: ny-sqlite-3.db, path is HD/Library/Application Support/The New Yorker/ny-sqlite-3.db
5. Open "ny-sqlite-3" in SQLite Database Browser.
6. IN SQLite Database Browser go to Browser Data/Table/Disks/DiskID, change all IDs to 9.
7. APPLY CHANGES/SAVE before closing SQLite Database Browser.
8. Open The New Yorker. app on your HD. Searching should be immediate and all DVD info you transferred should be there in The New Yorker Browser.

If you somehow screw up. Just trash all installed New Yorker folders, re-install, and edit the IDs again. Works for me.

Re: Swedish iPhone prices - The occasional scrivener - Gustaf Erikson's weblog

i dont know bt i just cant get it

Re: Not aging well - The occasional scrivener - Gustaf Erikson's weblog

I'm going to steer my son towards the first book at least when he's a bit older and can understand some more!

Re: Not aging well - The occasional scrivener - Gustaf Erikson's weblog

Hej Gustaf, your description of the Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy was most interesting, the fact that the lustre is gone. My children were most excited about the book and described it in a lot of detail, all the funny bits especially. I thought I have to read it too, but never managed to get through it, or if I did, it never fascinated me enough to finish it or to remember that I even read it. I have some vague memory of having read it myself but I am just not sure. That is quite incredible.

Re: Mounting LVM volumes from a USB disk - The occasional scrivener - Gustaf Erikson's weblog

Glad I could help, and thanks for the update about the need for a new package.

Re: Mounting LVM volumes from a USB disk - The occasional scrivener - Gustaf Erikson's weblog

Kudos!

All worked alright, and you seem to be the only solution that Google can find.

I ran only in one issue: a fresh ubuntu 11.04 doesn't recognise the command vgscan (and probably the others). If you open up the ny-sqlite-3.db file in that free program, you can see all the tables of the database, etc. You can open up the "Issues" table, and by typing the SQL command given above into the "Execute SQL" tab (update Issues set DiskID = 9 where DiskID <> 9;) and saving the database file - hey presto! it works! I am now going to copy all the rest of the issue files onto my hard drive. This has made a basically unusable reference tool usable again. There does not seem to be any new copyright protection added, since I already updated the program over the internet, and the sql database file was untouched. (Maybe if you got the update that took the dataset to 2008 you would have a problem, but this is good enough for me.

Re: The Complete New Yorker on your hard drive - The occasional scrivener - Gustaf Erikson's weblog

As of the 1.3 update to The Complete New Yorker, dated October 2008, the SQLlite fix described here and elsewhere no longer works. From my initial foray, it looks like a simple dB change won't fix this either. The crippleware looks to be embedded in the .dll files of the program. If you install the "original" Disk #1, the SQL update fix will still work; however, you'll only be able to read issues through a certain date. My original disk #1 goes through February of 2005. If you want issues after that, you have to update the dB using their program, and they're onto us :) Bummer.

Re: Integrating Disqus in a Blosxom blog - The occasional scrivener - Gustaf Erikson's weblog

Very cool! I use Cygwin and downloaded the source, compiled and installed. There are precompiled Windows binaries, that I suppose can be used from the Windows command prompt. Mr. Jalopy mentions a graphical application on the internet.

The file you use is ny-sqlite-3.db. Making a backup of this file is a good idea.
$ /usr/local/bin/sqlite3.exe ny-sqlite-3.db

There are two ways to approach this.
Brute force

Simply copy every single file from every DVD to your harddrive. This is a good approach if you have the space (around 50 GB). When you’ve done that, simply run
sqlite> update Issues set DiskID = 9 where DiskID <> 9;

Now all your issues are available from the harddrive. ]
------------------------------------

I haven't used a C compiler for 15+ years, so I just downloaded the binary from the sqlite website. I was curious about the number "9" designating the hard drive -- since I have three hard drives, including one external drive via a USB connection. So I figured I'd install the files on the external drive and launch the viewer from there. I guessed that my reading was going to be a lot slower than the USB interface anyways! At any rate, I just had to open a CMD window in the New Yorker subdirector and run the two commands shown above to open and modify the .db file. It worked perfectly, so THANKS!

-Pete
